ARTIST PROCESS
The proper term is French in origin, painting “En Plein Aire”, meaning painting outdoors directly from a motif that inspires you whether it be landscape, cityscape, object, portrait or still life. Many artists object to the French label, for example, calling their paintings “On the spotters”. Many PAP painters try to make a finished, frameable, gallery marketable painting while others are only collecting information (shape, color, value) for larger more finished paintings in the studio. The conditions, which are many, usually require painting small and fast and yield a result that is fresh, lively, full of light and atmosphere.
