ARTIST STATEMENT
I am usually disappointed when I view watercolor exhibitions, even the “Nationals”. The bulk of the paintings are what I call colored in drawings - in other words painting between the lines. Although skillfully and laboriously done they rarely employ the serendipitous quality of the medium. Watercolor painters I most admire are the likes of John Singer Sargent and John Marin as well as the mid-20th century “California Scene” painters. The lines, if any, were painted primarily after the bloom has dried and were freshly calligraphic and applied with bold execution.
