Salt Pool Triptych

One of my favorite bike rides is from Old Town San Diego south along the embarcadero and Harbor Drive to Imperial Beach, back up the Strand and then ferry across the bay to return to Old Town. One of the highlights along the way is the South Bay Salt works where salt is produced from evaporated sea water in large shallow ponds. These days it is fenced and you can’t get anywhere near the ponds – but it wasn’t always that way. I was always fascinated by the things people had tossed into the ponds that were revealed when they dried out with their incrustations of salt crystals, thus my urge to make these photographs.
