PICKET-UP!

Some of my projects evolve over a period of time, “like a fine wine aging,” before they actually become a solid reality rather than an idea floating around in my brain. PICKET-UP! Is a classic example. On a bike ride over two years ago I noticed a trash can full of old pickets that had been thrown away. I came back later and salvaged what I considered raw materials. Then the thought process began as to what I might construct from recycled material.

About 1.5 years later I began refurbishing, construction and assembly of the piece. I knew I wanted a circular pattern of sorts similar to a 3-D clock face. And while it represents 16 equal parts of 360 degrees it also looks like a propeller longing to fly. It needed something extra for the central crown point which I found at an antique store. It’s an old rustic patinated metal armillary sphere usually seen on sundials and weather vanes. Perfect finish!
